What Is Fictionkin? + My Kin List
In many online circles, when people say they're Fictionkin, they often mean they're a roleplayer who heavily relates to the characters they play. But this is a misappropriation of the word that probably originated from miscommunication on tumblr.
Fictionkin, the ORIGINAL definition, is a subset of Otherkin where a person identifies on a deep level as a character from a piece of popular media. This might sound confusing, but it's a necessarily broad term where the only criteria is that you feel as if you ARE a character, beyond the level of simply "relating to" them.
Fictionkin, as well as Otherkin in general, is a phenomena most commonly associated with spirituality. It's often linked to past and parallel life situations, but doesn't have to be. There are also psychological Otherkin whose identity springs from things like trauma or childhood imprinting.
Whether spiritual or psychological, you can have more than one "kintype," and your connections with those kintypes can fluctuate as easily as any other mood. Sometimes you'll feel distinctly like you have a single type, other days a mix, and some days you'll feel no connections at all. This is normal.
A lot of people want to know how they can be sure that they're Otherkin or not. Sadly, there's really not a concrete answer for that, unless you have a big wild spiritual experience you can't explain. I find it can be helpful to examine your behavior or emotions for patterns that don't have an easy mundane explanation.
As an example, I felt for years like Baikinman was my baby brother, and it confused the hell out of me - like, sure he's childish, but so is every other 80s villain, right? Why TF did I wanna give him noogies and tell him he needed to chill out? Then last year I suddenly remembered that he's from a set of triplets (his brothers are somewhat forgettable and have only made two animated appearances) and realized what I felt might be coming from one of my other lives.
For me the siblinghood feeling was strong enough to confirm the angry red Akakinman as a minor kintype. This is a pretty rare experience, even for me. Other kintypes, especially the major ones, require a lot of introspection and analyzing your own behavior patterns. Some people get memories of their other lives. Other people do not.
When you land on a main spiritual kintype, you'll know. That's a promise.
One last thing I should address for kin space newbies is canon divergencies. Many think that the reason spiritual fictionkin happens in the first place is that there are many, many worlds out there in the multiverse that closely resemble franchises in our world. But they all vary, and that's where canon divergencies come in. These differences can range from tiny things like eye color to huge things like character ages or even differences in entire settings. Remembering that things were different is also normal.
On a final note, there are probably a lot of worlds that resemble cartoons, games, anime that we simply don't recognize because they don't resemble anything created here. It's my personal belief that the reason we hear about kintypes from copyrighted work most often is simply because the reach of a commercial work makes it easier to identify those kintypes. I have seen on more than one occasion people who discover a kintype that is clearly cartoony, but not from a known work.
Without further ado, here is my kin list:
- Shielded Octotrooper (Splatoon)
- The Noise (Pizza Tower)
- Mido (Ocarina of Time)
- Akakinman (Anpanman)
For the record I wouldn't have chosen any of these kintypes for myself... but I guess there's nothing I can do about the massive gremlin energy that radiates out of me like a big flashing beacon...
...which I'll gladly talk about in an upcoming post! But I gotta go to work. So TTFN and see you soon!
